What do you need to know about our BISS Swim Meets?

The BISS Swimming programme strongly encourages parents to volunteer (when required) to help out during swim meets as well as support their children as much as possible. The help of parents is a vital part of making the swimming experience run as smoothly as possible. Parents are also advised to pack lots of snacks, water, a towel, sufficient swimming equipment, homework and warm clothes for their children to help them get through a tough day of racing. Parents can also volunteer to help with marshalling, timing, stroke and turn judging, starting, ribbon and award labelling if the opportunity presents itself.

What should swimmers wear?

Parents should make sure that students come dressed in a BISS sports shirt to support the team and should be aware that their child requires a BISS Swim cap to race with. These can be purchases in the school uniform shop, and caps can be purchased from Mrs Yardy. It is best if the students wear competitive tight race suits to help them be as well prepared as possible for swimming a race as possible. The swimming pool area will be warm, so swimmers should have a light shirt and pants for their marshaling time or a parka, but should make sure that they do not get cold between races as it can be quite cool outside.

Do swimmers choose the events they are swimming in?

Yes. The coaches will hand out letters prior to a swim meet a few weeks in advance that detail the information about the swimming competition such as transport and the like. Swimmers will be able to discuss their options with coaches and decide how many events they want to select depending on what is required during a swimming competition. However coaches will select relays based upon speed and age groups. Additionally, coaches may only be able to bring a certain number of swimmers to some meets, e.g. top 6, so this may also cause them to factor in speeds of the swimmers. The swimmers will then be able to practice their races before the meet as well as their relays.

As parent, do we know when our child will be swimming?

Yes. There will be programs known as heat sheets that are on sale during the meet, and will also be posted in the Marshaling areas. The coaches will also have these at hand and will be letting students know, when to swim. Additionally, marshalling personnel will let swimmers know which event is being marshalled, and where they should go once the have been marshalled.
