Week Beginning 24 April 2017


  • 27 April ‘How We Learn What We Learn’ Parent Workshop - Join Dr Hopkin for Supporting your Child to Read. 8:50-9:45 Stage One.
  • Healthy Snacks - Please ensure that your child’s daily snack is a healthy one
  • Warm Weather - Now the weather is getting warmer, please could you encourage your child to bring in a hat and also a water bottle so that they remain well hydrated during the day.
  • School Library - Our school librarians are in school until 4:30pm on a Monday and Tuesday.  If, as parents, you would like to borrow books you can set up afamily account.
  • 1J Class Assembly - Parents of 1J are invited to their class assembly at 1.45pm in Stage One on the 27 April.
  • ‘Let’s Be Ambitious’ - We will be sending home an extra optional homework sheet on Wednesday for the children that like an extra challenge.  More information will be available in their homework folders.


We will continue with non fiction text. The children will be focusing on making posters and leaflets to promote their outdoor learning space. We will focus on the features of posters/leaflets. Looking at catchy titles, grouping information, and powerful adjectives.

This is the first of two weeks on Data Handling. We will learn basic data concepts such as sorting information into different groups. We will also teach the ability to read simple picture graphs and bar graphs. This will be developed further as the children construct their own graphs and also begin to draw conclusions from different graphs.

We have now leant all the Phase 3 sounds. In the following weeks we will practise identifying the sounds and applying the sounds in our writing. We will learn the High Frequency Words- you, be, them, too, now.


This week we will begin a series of weeks on ‘alternative pronunciation’. There are a number of English letters that have different sounds within different words. Our starting examples will be vowel sounds; a, e, i, o and u. An example of alternative pronunciation would be the i sound in tin and find.

Puffer Fish

This week the Puffer Fish phonics group will be continuing to revise all of the sounds and tricky words in Phase 2. We will also focus on the tricky words- no, go, to, him, up.



This week Starfish will be learning alternative spellings for s and z. They will learn that  ‘s’ can be spelt as ‘st’ and ‘se’ e.g. listen and house and that ‘z’ as ‘se’ e.g. ease. The children will practise reading and spelling polysyllabic words with these spellings such as: whistle, wrestling, house, mouse, pause, because. 


We will begin to review all of our sounds from phase 2 and 3 this week before we beginning Phase 4 next week. We will be reading and spelling cvc and cvcc words using the graphemes : zz qu ch sh th ng ai ee ight oa o oar or u row oi ear air ure er. We will also be reviewing the spelling of tricky words from Phase 3.


This week the Jelly Fish group will focus on the sounds oi/oy and ir/er. They will be blending them together with other sounds when reading and spelling words i.e. boy, toy, enjoy, Roy, girl, bird, skirt and shirt. They will also be learning how to read and spell the tricky words people, house, have and like.


We will continueg to look at the life cycle of a plant and identification of common garden plants and flowers. We will monitor the progress of our bean plants from last week and make notes in our diaries. We will be using our digital literacy skills to help create graphs and pictures that will link with our data handling skills being taught in Maths.

Over the coming weeks the children will focus on developing Microsoft Office skills; specifically with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint. The children will develop typing skills and key skills in finding and using; text boxes, bold text, italics, changing fonts and font colours. All of which will be developed under our topic theme of Plants and Insects.

De kinderen van KS1 hebben zich deze week verdiept in het leven en de kunst van Piet Mondriaan.   Volgende  week gaan we  verder aan de slag met het schrijven van zijn biografie .  We laten ons inspireren door zijn Broadway Boogie Woogie  en creëren onze eigen Shanghai Boogie Woogie.

In de spellingslessen oefenen we de medeklinkerclusters uit de vriendjesflat!
