Week Beginning 12 February 2018

School begins again on Monday 26th February – the Year 5 team hope you had a wonderful Chinese New Year holiday.

The Year 5 Showcase will take place on 23rd March at 9:00.

LITERACY

This week we will have a focus on reading – comparing different books and authors and writing recommendations for friends. We will begin an author study of Shaun Tan and enter into the visual, kaleidoscopic world of his books The Viewer and The Lost Thing. We will be considering the themes, characters, setting and atmosphere of the books and sharpening our inference skills to help us further understand the texts.

MATHS

This week in Maths we will be looking at volume and capacity. The children will first examine the difference between the two concepts and consolidate their knowledge on converting between the different unitsof measurement. We will then investigate how to measure the volume of large objects before completing challenges around the school.

THEMED LEARNING

This week we will be looking at the important time in space engineering and studying the Space Race. This will include looking at space propaganda and identifying key moments in history. We will look at how the key events shaped space travel for the future.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING  AND  DIGITAL LITERACY

We are continuing with our digital literacy theme. We will discuss spam, and what we can do about it. We will define what spam is, explore strategies for safely managing unwanted messages and identify different forms of spam.

PSHCE

This term our new PSHCE / well-being program will begin.  The first core value covered is collaboration.  This is the ability to work constructively with others, and children will learn to negotiate, to resolve conflicts, and to support agreed solutions. In doing so, they will strengthen their sense of teamwork and realize where they lack certain skills; which they can later hone.

DUTCH

De Cito is afgerond. We werken aan de nieuwe tekst van Nieuwsbegrip, lezen in Estafette en werken in de werkboeken van Staal.

In Year 3 zijn we begonnen met het maken van een gedicht over een fantasiedier! We hebben al een mindmap gemaakt en gaan deze week verder met het zoeken naar de mooiste woorden om ons fantasiedier te omschrijven in een gedicht. Ook gaan we een afbeelding van ons dier maken.

In Year 5 staat de limerick centraal. Het rijmschema van de limerick en het bijbehorende ritme waarin een limerick ook op muziek te gebruiken is, geven we veel aandacht en we maken zelf ook meerdere limericken op muziek.

In Year 4 werken we met elkaar aan een rap.  Daar gaan we deze week mee verder.

En in Year 6 maken we een portretgedicht van onszelf of de ander.
