This year, we will continue to share staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more.  Our profile this week is Katherine George a FS1 Class Teacher:

I joined the BIS Abu Dhabi family in 2016 and have spent the last two years teaching little people in ‘Snail Class’.

I grew up in England in the rolling hills of Derbyshire. I’ve wanted to teach since I was a child (…or be an astronaut, but unsurprisingly the opportunities to join NASA in Derbyshire are limited!) and so began my teaching career in a local primary school back in 2011.

My move from home to the Middle-East was daunting. Although I miss my Mum’s cooking, the warm welcome I received at BIS alongside colleagues who’ve become my surrogate family soon ensured I felt at home. I absolutely love working at BIS. The family feel creates such happy learners who have a true sense of belonging. Although my ‘Snails’ are from all over the world, our diversity brings us together. As well as working in a school which has helped me to grow professionally, I’ve also had the opportunity to embark on a fantastic adventure, leaving me with the philosophy that taking risks makes us better learners!

In my spare time I love to keep active. I enjoy gymnastics, outdoor fitness and yoga. Snail Class have been very interested in my yoga journey and are now fast approaching and exceeding my own limited ability!

Music is another interest of mine. I have played the keyboard and the guitar for over 10 years and used to play in a band in Derby. I find music a great tool for learning, and for sharing my own passions with the students. I’ve taught Snail Class lots of new songs – from traditional camp fire songs to ones from bands like The White Stripes! I also love travelling – there is so much to see in the world. I have travelled around The Middle East, South East Asia, trekked around the west coast of Canada and trained teachers in the slums of Nakuru, Kenya.
