I studied for my Master of Arts (Hons) Degree in Primary Education at The University of Aberdeen in Scotland. In between semesters I pursued opportunities that would help to further my experience in working with children. These experiences included: working as a student leader at an International Summer School, a horseback counsellor and photographer for an American summer camp as well as an au pair for a Spanish family in Catalonia. Each of these experiences consolidated my belief that teaching is the career for me.
I initially started my career in KS2, teaching a Year 4 class in a large school where collaborative working and sharing of good practice were paramount. The following year, I taught in a much smaller school with a larger focus on outdoor learning and developing children’s creativity. Although each school had a different approach to teaching and learning, both significantly broadened my expertise. After two years of teaching in Scotland I have decided to pursue my long-term ambition of teaching abroad, specifically BIS Abu Dhabi because of their fantastic reputation and opportunities for quality professional development.
As a child I regularly engaged in extra-curricular activities and have continued many of these passions into adulthood. Currently, I spend the majority of my spare in the outdoors where I enjoy skiing, horse riding and hillwalking. In addition, I regularly attend highland dancing sessions and fitness classes to stay active. From a young age I have been a keen traveller and have visited over 20 countries in Europe, 10 states in the USA and parts of Asia. These experiences have given me the opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures. My passion for teaching, combined with my desire to learn more about the world, has inspired me to move to Abu Dhabi.
BIS Abu Dhabi is a unique place to work because of a multitude of reasons. Firstly, with over 70 different nationalities in one educational environment, the school lends itself to facilitating positive interactions between diverse cultures. The approach to teaching is individualised and aims to tap into personal interests and preferred learning styles. This child-centred approach, alongside the be ambitious philosophy, strongly encourages children to reach for their dreams. In addition, the access to advanced technology provides a unique platform for learning. It will be incredible to work in a school that has embraced and embedded the use of technology in the classroom to enhance learning.
