My first experience of teaching was for a charity Children’s International Summer Villages (CISV), who concentrate on building global friendships and allowing children to celebrate the difference and similarities in cultures across the world. This was such a rewarding experience which confirmed that teaching was the profession for me.
I went on to study at Newcastle University where received a BA in Geography and Town Planning which enabled me to immerse myself into human geography, from studying the political effects of the Rwandan genocide to looking at the economy and physical development of Rio de Janeiro.
After a break from studying I went on to work and travel around Australasia and Indonesia for a year , where I then came home to start my teaching journey. I was awarded a PGCE from the St Marys Twickenham after doing the schools direct route into teaching at a school in Newcastle. I then began my teaching career in a thriving school in Leeds, UK. The excellent professional development opportunities at the school gave me the opportunity to join the literacy team and also develop the role of PE coordinator, which as a sports and exercise lover, was a fantastic position to develop.
After working for an inspiring head for 2 years, I then moved to an inner city School in Bradford, in order to develop myself in a variety of schools. This position offered me new challenges including head of P.E and health and wellbeing team which covered R.E, PHSE and Science. This was a great opportunity to develop my leadership skills.
Prior to coming to Abu Dhabi, I worked for an outstanding teaching school in Sheffield where I had the chance to help build up an innovative Maths and Literacy curriculum which we supported other schools in delivering. While delivering Mastery maths, I have had fantastic opportunities to see how teacher from Shanghai plan and deliver their lessons, and incorporated this into my maths teaching today.
I am so happy to have the opportunity to start at Nord Anglia school alongside likeminded enthusiastic, hardworking and passionate practitioners.
Living in Sheffield I am very close to the Peak District- a beautiful area to run, climb and hike in. I am also fortunate to live near a lakeside which enables me to try water sports. I am currently learning to wake board and love paddle boarding - something I hope to continue in the UAE. I love to be active and I am very excited to start try some new hobbies in the desert rather than green hills in Derbyshire. I hope to make the most of living in Abu Dhabi, spending my holidays travelling and immersing myself in the culture of the Emirates.
