Anna Gillies

Year 2 Teacher

Hello, my name is Anna Gillies, I am originally from the Lake District, England. I studied at Lancaster University for my undergraduate degree in Psychology and later completed a PGCE in Primary Education at the University of Cumbria. After graduating, I worked for one year with young adults with severe learning difficulties and have also been lucky enough to work abroad with young children in Thailand, Spain and now as a qualified teacher in Qatar. In my free time, I love dancing Classical Ballet and keeping fit in the great outdoors! I look forward to meeting you all in September!

In September, I will be lucky enough to start my teaching career as an NQT at NAISAK. Prior to completing my PGCE in Primary Education, I studied for my Undergraduate degree in Psychology at Lancaster University and took an interest in the Developmental and Cognitive aspects. Since then, I have worked to support young adults with learning difficulties and volunteered as a well-being mentor for a charity that aims to support young people. Before starting my teacher training, I also had the opportunity to work abroad; teaching English at a nursey in Thailand and working as Au Pair/English Teacher for a Spanish family in Reus, Spain. During my time in Spain, I realised that working with children was what I could picture myself doing for the rest of my life!

During my PGCE year, I was extremely interested in working at an International School. I feel so privileged to have been offered the job at NAISAK because I want to be part of a school with a clear vision of achievement and a strong sense of community. I have formed a great impression of the school very quickly and I look forward to making strong connections with staff, parents and students. As a teacher, I set high standards whilst encouraging the children to always feel at ease by embracing their own individuality. I strongly believe teaching and learning should be challenging and engaging by tailoring to every child’s needs.

I come from a small town in the Lake District that is surrounded by beautiful landscape, mountains and lakes. Naturally, I have a great passion for walking, exploring and experiencing the outdoors that await my doorstep! Although I love where I live, I have a great passion for experiencing different cultures and learning new things, so I am very excited about moving to Qatar. I have danced classical ballet since the age of four and continued to practice whilst at University and recreationally as an adult. After achieving a distinction in my Grade 8 examination, I felt extremely proud of myself for all the hard work and perseverance that I went through – it was all worth it! My other hobbies include appreciating artworks, meeting up with friends, keeping fit, looking after my cat and learning beginners Spanish. I would love to continue to practice Spanish in Qatar as I believe bilingualism is a great gift to receive!

I am looking forward to working at a highly reputable international school that promotes a genuine love of learning and encourages creativity. I look forward to the challenges that await which will to continue to develop me as an outstanding teacher. NAISAK will be different to all the other schools I have worked in because of the many different people from all parts of the world. This makes me eager to learn about new communities and become part of a diverse team.
