As a British international school following the UK curriculum, we wished to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with students wearing the red, white, and blue colours of the UK flag. Also, International Day in Primary School created a great environment as students proudly represented their nationalities. And finally, find out more about Qustodio, an online parental control and digital wellbeing solution.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee

In the UK from Thursday 1st June, there were four days of celebrations marking the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. You may have seen some of these celebrations, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

On the evening of Thursday 2nd June, the British Embassy held a special event to commemorate this milestone for the Queen and the British people, and I was invited to attend on behalf of our school. There were speeches by the Ambassador and many other guests to celebrate the day. There was also a full British marching band dressed as British policemen, to entertain the crowd. The evening was topped off with a spectacular fireworks display to mark this memorable occasion.

As St Andrews is a British international school following the UK curriculum we wished to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by asking students to come in the red, white and blue of the UK flag. It was great to see so many students donning these colours. Going around the Primary School there was lots to learn about the UK from all the different activities that were taking place as part of the Jubilee celebration.

Last Thursday at the Primary School there was a great atmosphere created by the International Day festivities. It was great to see so many students, teachers, parents and staff dressed in clothing and costumes representing the wide range of nationalities we have in our school. There were three assemblies in the Quad for Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4, and finally Years 5 and 6. Children from each of these year groups performed songs, music and dances embodying their diverse cultural backgrounds and enthralling their friends and parents. A huge thank you must go to our music teachers as well as all the other teachers from across the school involved in putting together these unforgettable performances.

Each of the year groups assembled their own unique performances. These allowed everyone to discover new and exciting perspectives on their friends’ cultures and nations.

Through this annual celebration of diversity, we embrace the opportunity to learn more about one another and grow together as a community.

Introducing Qustodio, a parental control and digital wellbeing solution

As parents, many of us have concerns about what our children are doing online, and how we can best protect them and their wellbeing. One approach involves the use of parental monitoring and control software, and next academic year St Andrews will be partnering with Qustodio, one of the market leaders in this field, to provide discounted licences to families in our community.

To ensure that this solution will work for our community, we are looking for volunteers for a pilot programme over the summer. These families will receive a free licence to Qustodio’s premium service which allows installation on up to 5 devices. The software allows you to filter content and apps, monitor activity, set time limits, track calls and SMS and locate family members. There will be no commitment to any future purchase, and the only expectation will be to fill out a brief survey at the end of the pilot period to help us determine whether Qustodio is the right solution for the St Andrews community. Yearbook 2021-22 is looking really fantastic as we pull together all the best content to best describe this current year. It will be given out on the last day of this Term, Thursday 23rd June, which will finish at lunchtime so everyone will be able to have plenty of time to get home and start their holiday plans.

We very much look forward to seeing everyone back in school refreshed and ready for the start of the new academic year on Monday 15th August 2022.
