Staff Profiles: Ms Leanne

Leanne Magee

Year 5 Teacher and Primary Literacy Coordinator

I graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 2000 with a 2:1 in BA (Hons) Primary Education specialising in English (with QTS). After a short period carrying out supply work in different year groups in a variety of schools in the Liverpool area, I was offered the permanent position of Year 3 Teacher in Longmore Junior School. During the two years I worked at this school, I was also given the position of RE Coordinator. Due to wanting a change in location, I looked for work in another part of the country and began working in Year 4 at North Cheshire Jewish School. This was a great opportunity to work in a fantastic school in this area as well as learn about a different religion. I enjoyed two years at this school, before my partner (now husband) and I had a desire to teach abroad. We looked at schools in several countries, but we made the decision to accept job offers at St Andrews International School Bangkok.

I initially thought we would stay at St Andrews for two years, but I have now completed more than a decade! I worked for two years as a Teacher in Year 5 and then moved on to work for seven years in Year 4. During this time, I helped to set up the House system in school and was the House Leader for Lahu. When a position came up for Primary Literacy Coordinator, I welcomed the chance to take on a role of management. I am now teaching Year 6 and I am still thoroughly enjoying my role as Literacy Coordinator as well.

I am an avid reader and, in my spare time, I enjoy reading a variety of genres and love to discover exciting new authors. As well as reading for pleasure, I make sure I keep up-to-date with all the recent educational changes, and at some point in the future, I may look into completing a master's degree. For mental exercise I like to play brain training activities, and to keep me physically fit, I love to swim and cycle. At weekends, my husband and I often retreat to Hua Hin in order to get fresh air and enjoy the cycling around the wide open roads. This is also a great place to walk our dog, as it can be hard to find areas to allow him a proper run around in Bangkok. Friends are very important to me; I love to meet up with them whenever possible - be it to shop, have a pamper or simply have a chat.

St Andrews is a wonderful school for staff to work in and a fantastic school for students to learn in. One of the main things which has kept me at the school so long is the close-knit community between staff, students and parents. I have always felt at home here, and think we have a great support system.

Since I began working at the school, I have seen the school grow - both in size and what we have to offer anyone who has the pleasure of joining our school. The facilities have improved every year, and our broad curriculum provides opportunities for every student to be suitably challenged. All the teachers at St. Andrews understand our students learn at different paces and in different ways. We provide a range of activities which are as hands-on as possible, as well as encourage students to become both independent learners and great team members. I like that our teachers strive to ensure the students know where they are at with regards to their learning, and they also motivate them to look for ways of improving their own knowledge, skills and understanding.

St Andrews is a superb environment to inspire our students; I am proud to say I am a part of the St Andrews team!
