The Application Process

The exact process of applying to universities varies by country, and in some cases even varies between universities in the same country. As a very rough guide, see the following step-by-step process

  1. Shortlist the universities and courses you're interested in. Speak to family and friends, research online and in books, speak with the school's university guidance counsellor. Record your Shortlist on BridgeU.

  2. Agree on a final list of applications. After speaking with the counsellor, narrow your shortlist down to 5-10 universities/courses. Update BridgeU by moving these courses from you Shortlist to your Applications, but also record this list on your Overview Document. Then get your Overview Document signed and approved.

  3. Request recommendations (if needed). If you need a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) it should have already been agreed via your Overview Document. You still need to personally speak to the agreed teacher to ask them to write your LOR. After that, you need to send them a LOR request via BridgeU.

  4. Complete your Essays, Personal Statement, Resume etc. These will have been started during Year 12. Perfect them. Complete as many drafts as possible.

  5. Start and Submit your applications. Many applications are online and require you to submit your details and documents before the school sends supplementary documents. Make sure you know what YOU need to do and by when for your applications. Submit your applications by the STA deadlines. If you need a Transcript or High School Statement to submit yourself, request it via Form 1 in a timely manner.

  6. Inform school via Form 2. Once you have completed all stages of your application, complete Form 2 to inform school and to start the process whereby school sends any remaining documents (if needed). All of your applications must end with you submitting Form 2. In some cases, you may need to submit this form before an application is complete - this is the case if the university needs a document from school mid-way through an application.

  7. Keep school updated. Share all communication between you and your universities with the University Guidance Counsellor. Make sure you share details of offers and rejections, and also any other matters.

  8. Complete a Results Service request. After you have received offers, complete the Results Service form to state which universities you want to receive your IB results on IB results day.
