We will soon begin to compete in the annual Global Campus Debating League. Debating gives you the chance to argue about things in a respectful way. It provides students with the opportunity to develop critical thinking, effective communication and teamwork and research skills.
This year the Primary GC Debating League will be run as an ASA on Thursdays from 3.30-4.30pm starting from season 2. We will meet weekly to write our arguments either ‘for’ or ‘against’ given motions, to compete with other Nord Anglia schools in the China region and around the world.
The motions we will be given will focus on the United Nations’ Global Goals (look here for more information: http://www.globalgoals.org/ ). Examples of possible motions include:
- ‘Life below water’: Although aquariums are a fun day out, we think that fish shouldn’t be taken out of their natural habitat.
- ‘Good health and well-being’: We think that supermarkets should make food that is bad for you more expensive.
There will be three rounds, each competing against a different school using a range of motions. In each round children will work together to compose an opening statement, main argument, rebuttal, right to reply and closing statement. Each team will receive a score at the end of each round and personalised feedback in order to improve further. This year we will have the opportunity not only to debate online using forums, but also to debate live using video cameras on ‘Google hangouts’.
If your child is in Year 3-6 and would like to join the Primary GC Debating team, you can sign up on the season 2 ASA list here: https://www.socscms.com/socs/login.asp
Please see the above for photographs and results from the GC debating league last year. We look forward to another successful league of debating!
