My career started at The Holt School in Wokingham, where I had three very enjoyable years learning how to create exciting lessons that captured the minds of my students through being diverse and experimental in my approach to teaching. Whilst there I broadened the skills base and therefore expanding the art department, by introducing the students to 3D installation art, sculpture and photography. From the Holt School I progressed on to Saints Peter and Paul Catholic College in Widnes, here I carried out the role of Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator for Art.  I designed and introduced a structured, tiered platform that students progressed through during Years 7, 8 and 9. Each tier allowed students to grow in confidence, learn to research, explore, experiment and become self-reliant, independent thinkers. From Saints Peter and Paul Catholic High School, I continued on to Saint Bede’s Catholic High School in Lytham and took on the role of Subject Leader for Art. Building on my previous teaching experience, I developed a highly successful department that, in the final two years, enjoyed the highest pass rates in the school and Lancashire.

I joined The British School of Beijing, Shunyi (BSB) in 2015 as a Visual Arts teacher for the secondary school. I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 2001. Later, in 2003, I completed a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from the same University. I began teaching during my postgraduate studies and realised this was a passion I could pursue.  In 2006 I completed my PGCE through the University of South Africa (UNISA).

After growing up and going to the university in the United States, I moved to Brazil to work on my master’s degree in Salvador, a beautiful city on the ocean in the northeast. In 2009, I moved to São Paulo to teach music at St. Francis College, an international IB school, and became the Music Coordinator there. In 2011, I began a doctoral program in International Education Administration and Policy at the University of Minnesota. I have always wanted to come back and live in Asia again; I studied abroad in Thailand for a semester and visited other nearby countries including China in 2002. So when the opportunity arose, I joined the BSB team as Director of Music in 2015.

    Music Teacher

    Conrado Maia

I grew up in Brazil in a very musical environment. My parents played an important role during my childhood and introduced me to a variety of musical genres and styles, from Brazilian folk songs to Beatles. I had my moments playing football when I was a child, but when I turned twelve I switched the ball for a pair of drumsticks - it was love at the first sight! Drums initially and percussion later on became my hobbies. When I had to make up my mind about what career would suit me, music was a natural choice.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree and have been performing and teaching music for nearly twenty years. My career as a professional musician is closely intertwined with my career as a music teacher. Both had a role in deepening my understanding of music and have given me the opportunity to pass on what I love to my students.

I joined the Music Department at the British School of Beijing in 2017 and am very excited to be part of this great team!
