I studied Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music at university, which taught me a lot about being a versatile musician. Arranging and composing, recording studio techniques, band leadership, and stagecraft were some of the areas that really interested me.
I have been a teacher for 16 years and was previously Head of Music in Washington, Tyne and Wear. I have a keen interest in technology, so this has played a large part in my teaching. I have an in-depth knowledge of recording studio technology, digital stage lighting and sound, DJ-ing and video editing. I have taught these skills to students to complement their performance activities in music and performing arts. If there were one thing I would like students to gain from their experience with me, it would be a passion for learning.
I think it is very important to play music live, so I have always been in a band. I have gigged professionally and played lead guitar in a rock band. I have also accompanied many students on stage, both in school and at regional and national competitions.
Outside of school I enjoy computer programming and anything related to technology. Back in the UK, I often surfed in the North Sea, which can be quite cold! I have paraglided in the UK, France and Spain, and completed a number of half-marathons.
