I am a bilingual English and Spanish speaker and loved studying languages at school. As a result, I decided to study Spanish along with history at University of Nottingham, and as part of my degree I also opted to learn a new language, Portuguese. My degree included a semester at the University of Granada in Spain and a semester in Portugal, where I worked as a language assistant in a Secondary school, giving me my first real experience of teaching.
After completing my degree, I worked as a translator and then took some time out to travel around China and Vietnam. I soon realized that my passion lay in teaching and I began my Secondary postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE) in modern languages. After completing my PGCE, I worked at a Secondary school in Bedfordshire, where I successfully introduced Spanish as a new language to the curriculum. I believe that language learning is an integral part of a child’s education and provides them with essential communication skills and a deeper appreciation for other cultures.
In August 2012 I joined BISC as a Spanish teacher for Years 2-11, and I now teach Spanish in the Middle and High Schools. As a teacher of the Ab Initio International Baccalaurate Spanish course and the College Prep courses, I thoroughly enjoy introducing students to a new language and culture, and developing their interest and motivation for language learning.
Although I was born and raised in Bedfordshire, England, my mother is Spanish, and I was lucky enough to spend time in southern Spain throughout my childhood. In my free time, I enjoy reading and the arts, in particular music, and I have made the most of all of the cultural opportunities available in Chicago. I play both the violin and the tenor saxophone and I have played in the band for the school production of Bugsy Malone and taken part in the Key Stage 2 house music competitions as a judge. I also love to travel and have been working my way around the US since arriving in Chicago.
