Across campus LIS had an outstanding week of STEAM challenges. 8th graders participated in the Epic Identity challenge. This challenge is for NAE students to learn about wearable technology to enhance human performance.  All 8th grade students took part and 4 were chosen to go to Hong Kong to the Nord Anglia STEAM Festival at the International School Hong Kong from 16th - 19th January 2019.

The challenges took place during (STEAM) Science, Technology / Design, Arts and Math classes. Students used the MIT design thinking process (empathy, define, ideate, prototype and test) to design, build and present their ideas of wearable technology to a panel of judges.

Hack the Tube

During challenge week, Hack the Tube was implemented for students 5th grade to 10th. The is a task for Nord Anglia students is to take a paper towel tube and reimagine its use to be transformed into something different. The design process of the famous MIT Mechanical Engineering project 2009 is embedded within the Hack the Tube activity. During this challenge, students must follow three simple steps:

1. Ideate – Brainstorm as many ideas as possible before beginning to design anything.

2. Model – Establish the two best ideas and plan their designs before beginning the build process.

3. Test – Once the designs have been built, test them to see if they work (or if not applicable, test whether the designs match up to the initial idea). Over 100 students participated in this fun event producing some innovative ideas.

This year, the focus for the Nord Anglia Education Global Campus goals are goals 4 and 16.

Throughout our school the different year groups were given various challenges to represent these goals.

Our Early Years students created Superhero masks and Superhero Comics.

Senior Kindergarten to Grade 2 created Superhero Hideouts using Lego and Superhero Comics to solve a problem that affects the world in relation to Goal 4.

Grades 3 to 5 took part in the Photography competition and Creative writing competition.

Grades 6 - 11 students were involved in the Creative Writing Competition which focused on Global Goal 4: Quality Education. Students were invited to respond to one of four prompts to help them generate ideas.  Most of our students wrote from the perspective of someone who has been denied an education or has found ways in which to overcome their barrier to education. Students were given the opportunity to write their creative responses during English class time whilst the Grade 11 students worked on their pieces during their Theory of Knowledge class. Their work has been collated together and made into separate grade books whilst the prize winners’ work is currently displayed in our Creativity Museum on the third floor of the cafeteria.  We would encourage our prize winners to enter the Nord Anglia Writing Competition in December.
