Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during November to raise awareness of men's health issues. All around the world men take part in this event with the aim of supporting the Movember Foundation whose focus is research into preventable cancer and cancer related illnesses.
Léman International School is participating in Movember this year and your children will have seen that many teachers are growing their moustaches and beards to help raise awareness. Please see some of our participating teachers whose photos have been taken clean shaven, and again one week later. The final showdown will be on Friday the 30th of November when students may pay 1 RMB to vote for the best moustache. All money raised will go to the Movember Foundation and cancer research. Please send in 1 yuan with your child on the 30th November to support this noble cause.
ALSO don't forget to encourage your children to "move" for Movember. This helps to support your child’s understanding of the issue and helps them to think about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. If they can raise any sponsorship for their ‘move’, this will also be sent to the foundation. Collection of sponsor forms, issued at the beginning of the month, will be 27th November – prizes will be given for the biggest mover per age group and the highest amount of sponsorship raised. Lets help our children to be ‘Global Citizens’.
World Children’s Day/Movember Walkathon
United Nations Universal Children's Day was established in 1954 to aim to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. It is celebrated on November 20th every year as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, promotes and coordinates this special day, which also works towards improving children's welfare, promote international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide. Many schools and other educational institutions make a special effort to raise awareness and inform children of their rights. Teachers are stimulating their pupils to think about the differences between themselves and others and explain the idea of "rights" as a way to raise awareness. Which is why we thought another way of raising awareness for World's Children Day would be to organize an "A Walkathon"- to walk for those children who may be denied the right to walk to or from school and/or around their communities and schools.
In addition to walking for children who have been denied the right to walk, a walkathon is a great way for students to participate and engage in the Movember moving count challenge set for the month of November. Students can use this as a way to get more sponsorships while also raising awareness for World Children's Day and Movember. It is a great opportunity for our school to be involved and connect with the Movember Association to raise awareness for men's health while promoting World Children's Day.
