Grade 9

The Grade 9 MYP Mathematics class is currently learning to solve real-world problems using right angle trigonometry.  In a recent class, the students developed their social and organizational skills by working in small groups to attempt to find the heights of objects located on, or nearby, the LIS campus.  They did this by making a clinometer to measure angles; using a trundle wheel or tape measure to measure distances; and using their knowledge of trigonometry to calculate the unknown heights.

Grade 10

The Grade 10 MYP Mathematics class is building upon their knowledge of right angle trigonometry by investigating methods of finding unknown measurements of non-right angle triangles.  Next week, they will apply this knowledge to solving real-world problems involving trigonometry, such as in navigation or surveying.  Students will continue to use trigonometry in their current unit of study when learning about vectors.

Diploma Program

The Grade 11 Mathematics students have nearly completed Topic 3:  Circular functions and trigonometry.  They are using the knowledge and problem-solving strategies that they developed in MYP to solve more complex problems in trigonometry, such as mathematical modeling using trigonometric functions and finding unknown measurements in two or three dimensions.  At the end of February, the Grade 11 students will begin to study Topic 6:  Calculus.

The Grade 12 students are in various stages of preparing for their mock exams and completing the study of new content for HL Mathematics.  Hang in there!  The end is nearly within sight.
