TASTY GEOLOGY with Grade 4!!

The Grade 4’s have been learning about rock formation and types in their IPC Unit, ‘It’s a Wonderful World’. This week , Ms Victoria brought them to the kitchen to conduct some practical, and delicious, experiments to show how different  categories of rocks are formed by heat and pressure. Our sedimentary rocks were made by melting marshmallows and butter, and adding rice krispies and M and M’s, mixing together, and leaving the mixture cool together into a hard sheet. We made igneous rocks by putting melted chocolate  into cups of ice cream and placing in the freezer to cool so that the chocolate ‘erupted’ through the ice-cream and cooled like smooth lava. Our metamorphic rocks were layers of graham crackers, marshmallow,  gummy bears and chocolate heated in the oven and then compacted together as tightly as possible.  It was the tastiest experiment we have done!!!
