Connect & Make Friends

You will find that Guangzhou has a large expatriate population. They are very friendly and always willing to try things and visit new places. The community is very close-knit and several opportunities exist for networking and socialising.

  • Guangzhou has plenty of social groups for both families and mothers, such as Guangzhou Women’s International Club (GWIC). At the GWIC morning coffees and afternoon teas, you will get a chance to meet new friends and try some delicious food.
  • The Chambers of Commerce, Consulates and organisations such as the Guangdong International Volunteer Expatriate Services (GIVES) often work together to host family days, like British Day and the annual Food and Fun Fair.
  • Our school’s Parent Support Group (PSG) is a great way to get involved and meet families. They organises activities like bake sales and other fun events.
  • Hiring a Chinese tutor is very useful. Learning the basics will help you commute around Guangzhou with ease.
  • Local people are friendly and accomodating. They are helpful in overcoming the initial culture shock and homesickness, making it easier to immerse yourself in your new life.
  • It’s very important to find a doctor that you trust. There are plenty of good clinics staffed with expat and local doctors. The school has built good relations with them over time and can offer advice on where to go.
  • There are plenty of groups that organise events on weekends and evenings, for adults and children alike, such as the Hash House Harriers, Guangzhou Rams (rugby), Guangzhou Football Academy or Guangzhou Youth Soccer League (GYSL). There are plenty of activities available for all hobbies and interests all year round.
  • Chinese families and friends often like to invite you to their homes. They are very welcoming and hospitable people. This experience is always wonderful and helps you to feel comfortable in your new surroundings.
  • Take some time out to explore the city on foot with a friend or two. You can visit local areas to indulge in some dim sum and tea. During the holidays, try to venture out to the hundreds of beautiful tourist destinations that China has to offer.

The PSG is always happy to help new families settle in and we can put you in touch with them as you make your move to Guangzhou.
