After completing a Bachelors of Arts degree at Brown University in Rhode Island, I worked as a paralegal and then, a researcher assisting Fortune 500 companies. I was also part of a landmark Title IX lawsuit which aimed to improve opportunities for females in sports. During this time I did lots of public speaking, testified before the US Congress and was part of several television programs connected to women’s sports. After meeting some incredibly passionate teachers, I decided I wanted to feel that type of passion for my work.
I spent a year working for a company that sent me to different private schools around the US to teach reading and study skills followed by six months at a school for at-risk 7th graders in Washington, DC and six months teaching English in Venezuela.
This was enough for me to be sure I wanted to dedicate my life to teaching. I enrolled in an alternative route program in Baltimore, Maryland which allowed me to teach second-grade full time while getting my teaching certification in the evenings. I was selected at my school as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year in two of my three years teaching in Baltimore.
I loved teaching but yearned get back to Latin America. In 1999 I got a two year contract to come teach third grade at Country Day School. I loved every minute of my two years in Costa Rica. During vacations, I earned a Masters Degree in Education through Framingham State College.
At Country Day I was blown away by how easily children learned language. My second graders spoke two, three, even four languages. I felt it was a real disservice that most students in the US do not have the opportunity to really learn a second language in school. So, I found a dual-language public school in New York City, where I got a job teaching third grade in English and Spanish on alternating days. I taught there for 3 years, spending my summers in Ecuador, Mexico and Brazil.
Once again I was pulled back to Latin America. In 2004 I returned to Country Day School as a second grade teacher. After teaching 2nd grade at CDS for ten years and having two children of my own, I chose to step out of the classroom and work as an English language development teacher. In this, my current role, I support students who enter our school and are not proficient in English. As I transitioned to this role, CDS gave me the opportunity to earn a TOEFL certificate and to attend multiple conferences on teaching English as a foreign language.
Teaching is truly my passion. I feel very fortunate to have a job I enjoy so much.
