Cassandra Bruington - Country Day School

MS ELA teacher and Literacy Coach

After a semester abroad in Stellenbosch, South Africa I realized my passion for providing educational equality. After my return to the Midwest, USA, I earned my degree in Child and Family Studies at Northwest University in Maryville Missouri. I joined Teach for America to pursue my desire to help close the educational achievement gap in the US. Initially, I taught 6th grade reading in Kansas City, Missouri at an African-centered Middle School. While teaching, I earned my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Rockhurst University in 2011 while working as a Reading Teacher.

From there, I joined a team as a Founding Teacher for a first year charter school and helped to develop curriculum for the English Language Arts Department. I spent another 2 years in education at a public school in North Kansas City  before relocating to Houston, Texas. For two years I led a Children’s Church as a Director supervising and organizing programming for nearly 200 children, ages 1 to 12 years old. I helped to implement structure and recruit volunteers to manage Sunday and Wednesday church services as well as weekend and additional events for children and their families.

After moving Costa Rica, I began pursuing another passion of mine, dance. I started taking dance classes and exploring the area around with weekend trips to San Jose, Jaco, and celebrations in Puerto Viejo, Limon. A book, a blanket, and the beach make for a wonderful getaway. I enjoy weekend trips to the beach, training with my dance company, and early mornings at the market. I have found comfort in finding a local church home and trying new recipes in the comfort of my new home.

I feel extremely blessed to be working at the Country Day school in Costa Rica, where I currently serve early childhood through middle school teachers and students as a Literacy Coach and 6th grade English Language Arts lab class teacher. My role is to help teachers create and implement balanced literacy as well as a workshop model. My own class is one in which teachers are able to observe and practice best practices and Reading and Writing teaching strategies that will be useful and effective in their own classrooms. I love building relationships with my students, their families, and the community. You can find my classroom full of laughter, conversation, and creative thinking. I believe in providing structure, high expectation, and student choice.

I recently started an after school program for students who love to read and write and want to perform: speeches, debates, commercials, skits, and more! Having self-published a book, Grow,  I wanted to share my love for writing to connect.  I will merge ELA with creative arts to teach and develop speaking, listening, reading, writing, and presentation skills and to create competent and confident thinkers and learners.
