The 2017-18 school year marked my ‘silver anniversary’ as an educator: a shiny little milestone that I’m proud to acknowledge, but one that it’s sometimes hard to believe is already behind me! It just goes to show that there’s more than a little truth in that old adage about enjoyment and the flight of time.
In 1989 I graduated from the University of Glasgow (my Scottish hometown) in the UK with an MA in French Language and Literature; I went on to complete my PGCE in Primary Education at the university’s St Andrew’s College shortly afterward. My very first teaching position was as a Grade 4 classroom teacher at an international school in Singapore and, since then, I’ve worked in eight countries, spanning four continents, gaining a broad range of experience as a teacher, curriculum coordinator/designer, and school evaluator. I’ve taken great inspiration and encouragement from those friends and colleagues I’ve met along the way whose thinking and follow-through on ‘all things education’ is purposefully connected, joyously creative and innovative, and, above all else, learner-centered.
Since 2003, I have also had the great pleasure and privilege of being invited to assist on a number of international school Evaluation Teams with the Council of International Schools (CIS) in the Hague, and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in the USA: helping schools and educator teams to consolidate and further their development initiatives in this way has proven to be one of the most rewarding ways in which I’ve been able to give a little something back to a profession that has been very good to me over the years.
Costa Rica is now - finally! - the place I’ve come to call home. Four years ago, I married a wonderful Tico man and we’ve been living happily ever after in the wee flat above his bookstore in the heart of San José ever since. I spend my free time in random bursts of diverse activity: in between bouts of terrible-British-soap-opera-watching, I’ve recently been making some great chili hot sauce and writing poems for children.
