James Tucker

James Tucker. Middle School at Country Day School

Middle School Principal

After studying Philosophy and Literature at Edinburgh University, my teaching career has seen me move from East Croydon with the Teach First program to two outstanding international schools in Santiago Chile, as Head of Philosophy and then as Middle School Principal.

I have experience working in the British, IB and US systems and I believe firmly that the essence of good teaching and learning are high-expectations, challenge and a lot of love and support and that this remains the same despite the Curriculum.

Whilst in Chile I met my wonderful wife Maria Eugenia and along came my anglo-chilean daughter, Lucy. I discovered snowboarding, Chilean wine and folkloric music and completed my Msc in Public Policy and Management from the University of London. I’m currently half way through a certificate in educational leadership from the Harvard graduate school of education.

After seven years in Chile we took the difficult decision to leave friends and family behind to pursue a new life in Costa Rica and so far so good: we’re loving the lush green surroundings, friendly people and incredible school. I play the guitar very badly (although my daughter seems to enjoy it every so often) and have been practicing Kung Fu for over 10 years.

My educational philosophy is firmly rooted in concern for the whole child; we should educate the head, the heart and the hand and ensure that school is always a safe, friendly and challenging place for everyone to learn in.
