We believe that all teachers are responsible for planning to meet the needs of all students and must be proactive in achieving this. The first instance of support for students is through their inclusion in the regular classroom in collaboration with the SSS inclusion teachers. CDS has a team of inclusion teachers who work closely with the Principal, Counsellors, and teachers to lead the process which meets the students where they are and provides the support required for them to learn and progress.
There is a referral process which helps to manage the services provided and identify what each student’s learning needs are. The first step in the process is when the classroom teacher submits a referral form that will be further discussed and analyzed by the Student Service Team. If the team thinks that more information needs to be gathered, a SSS teacher will observe the student in the regular classroom and will talk with the classroom teacher. Both teachers will come up with an action plan to implement in the regular classroom. If the decision is to offer another kind of service to work a specific skill, the SSS team will suggest either internal or external evaluation or both.
Depending on the evaluation results, the student will either receive support in school, or see an external specialist if he or she needs services that CDS does not provide internally such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, or emotional therapy.
