ACADEMIC RESULTS

Standardized Assessments in Elementary and Middle School

In Elementary and Middle School, we implement the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA)'s Measures of Academic Progress (MAPs) tests. These tests are conducted electronically among a thousand international schools worldwide to support students and teachers in their teaching and learning endeavors.

MAPs provide us with a wide range of information on how well our students are mastering standards-based content and skills compared to those of other schools. MAPs give comprehensive data on the learning growth of each individual student. Twice per year, CDS students in Grades 1 through 5 take tests in both Reading and Mathematics, and students in Grades 3 through 5 take an additional test in Language Usage.

We analyze their results and use them to inform future teaching and learning. They're also used to help evaluate our programs and resources to ensure we have effective, high-quality frameworks to guide our teaching and learning.

 

GPA and Rank

We calculate a student's GPA over a three-year period of Grades 10-12. Only approved courses taken at CDS are calculated into the GPA. All online courses attached to transcripts are from fully accredited providers.

Because of the small number of students in our classes and their multicultural and varied scholastic backgrounds, we do not find it useful to rank our students.

 

AP and Honors Courses

CDS offers the following AP courses: Art, Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Comparative Government, English Language, English Literature, Environmental Science, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Psychology, Physics Part I, Statistics, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, US History and World History. In addition, we offer the following honors courses: Integrated Math III, Pre-calculus, English 10, and Linear Algebra.

 

The Costa Rican Baccalaureate Program

The Costa Rican Baccalaureate program in Grade 12 is the Costa Rican Ministry of Education’s secondary school or high school credential. This program and diploma enables students to study at universities in Costa Rica.

 

National Honor Society

Students with a cumulative high school average of 90% are candidates for the National Honor Society. Students who demonstrate scholarship, leadership, character, and service are candidates for membership selection.
