Students in Julia Wadsworth’s 1st grade music class recently had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate and compose with Juilliard Guest Artist, Jessica Meyer. Jessica plays the viola and is a prolific composer and performer who has worked with students and teachers all around the world, including many of our students and teachers here at North Broward. The 3 week project involved prompting students to create small musical ideas, or ‘motives’, that would sound ‘healing’, and to then have Jessica piece together these ideas into one large work that she would perform for us on her viola.
To fit all of these sounds into one piece written for a solo instrument, Jessica Meyer makes use of a loop pedal that allows her to record, replay, and overlap multiple parts. Our hope was to provide an outlet for students to express their emotions, to feel comforted by the sounds of their own musical ideas, and to see the beauty that can come from working together as a team. We hope you enjoy and feel the healing power of music while listening to this one-of-a-kind musical creation.
