IB Teacher, Olivia Marancy-Ferrer, Ph.D, and students, Kamilla Ismailova, Emmanuelle Parafiniuk, Fabian Salvador, Karina Samuel, Kylee Vest, redefine what makes our identity through the representation of visual art.
The art project, “L’Autre”, which means “The Other” represents “how we define each other, the other, and how we are, ourselves, defined through the eyes of others.” Inspired by the famous play “No Exit”, by Jean-Paul Sartre, NBPS IB students absorbed the unique concept of how “we are defined: the eyes of the others are mirrors in which we see ourselves.”
Reflection is a key element of this piece. The center of the eye allows the viewer to see themselves within the holistic view of an eye. The iris encompasses the eyes of the NBPS community, the sclera displays handwritten words of how individuals define themselves. The background incorporates words that represent on how society defines individuals. The words chosen are the result of a survey conducted on the NBPS community, in which individuals we asked how they think others see them.
“IB classes ideally help students to think critically, be creative and think globally. Some of the topics we discussed this year and last year were what makes our identity, what impact and or defines who we are,” said Marancy-Ferrer.
