Written by Nicholas McGauley, Music Teacher

Despite the slightly uncomfortable weather, the peaceful tree lined streets and gardens of this colonial district provided a perfect setting for performances by both staff and students from BSG.

To begin the programme was a fabulous and very apt performance of Debussy’s Jardin Sous la Pluie (Gardens in the Rain) played by Lynn Ma who is currently in Year 13 studying A Level Music. This was followed by an excellent rendition of Schubert’s Impromptu in G Flat by Iris Cheung on piano. Miharo Zheng then took the stage with her cello to perform a popular Baroque dance called Gavotte in C minor by J.S. Bach. The very talented flautist Angela Ye followed this with two sonatas by C.P.E. Bach and Poulenc, with piano accompaniment from Mr Wright, which proved to be quite a challenge due to the fans threatening to blow her sheet music away.

It was then the turn of the primary school students beginning with Fiona Liang, an exceptionally skillful Year 5 student who played a very interesting and playful piece entitled Student Concerto No. 1 by Seitz. At this point, the primary music teacher Mr. Sinclair showed off his talents with a powerful vocal piece filled with imagery called Sea Fever that was originally a poem by John Masefield. Ms Queenie followed this performance with a fantastic performance of Sonatina for Violin by an ex IGCSE music student from BSG, Ethan Zhang, who gained 100% pass mark for this great composition. Nine-year-old Sabrina Chiu then wowed the audience with an extremely impressive performance of Nocturne by Grieg, which led to the climax of the concert with Ms Angie’s Junior Strings performing an exciting interpretation of Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings No. 3.

With this being the first BSG concert of the school year, it was particularly exciting for all to see the exceptionally high level of skill and talent from our students, and what they have to offer in the many concerts and events at BSG over the next few months.
