Parent Update - 8 January 2016

08 January 2016

  • SotW - 8 Jan

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and welcome back to our Spring Term at NAIS. After three quiet weeks over Christmas, it was a real pleasure to have all our (noisy) students back in school!

As we start a new term, I wanted to flag up information that we update regularly on Firefly. Firefly is the go-to place to see what’s happening in your child’s class today, including homework and trip details, as well as helping you to plan ahead for activities in Terms 2 and 3.

The most commonly-updated areas are ‘Parents’, ‘Primary’ and ‘Secondary’, which you can click on from the Homepage. I particularly love the following sections:

Parent -> School Life -> School Calendar

Here you’ll see one calendar showing all the holidays and term dates (2015 and 2016) and another showing all the ‘Important Dates'. You can print out these calendars and stick them on your fridge!

Parent -> News & Insight

Here you’ll see Parent Workshops, Parent Updates (these weekly emails from me are saved here) and Daily News. Daily News is a great way to see whats going on across the school.

The Primary & Secondary areas lead you to your child’s Year group, which are packed with information about what is happening in your child’s class.

“Liking” our Facebook page is also a great way to keep up to date.

UPCOMING DATES: Please remember to check your Class Blogs for class activities

  • Monday 11 Jan to Friday 15 Jan: Inter-House Football – All students – Please wear your House t-shirts for PE lessons. Swimming lessons will go ahead as usual.
  • Wednesday 13 Jan (3.15pm to 5.00pm): 'Netball Fun Tournament’ - Come and see how much our Junior and Senior netball squads have improved over their first term as a team. Come and watch and support, or throw on your shorts and trainers and I’m sure that you’ll get a game!

Parent Workshops (8.30am to 9.00am in the Cafeteria)

  • Tuesday 26 January — How to support your child’s Maths learning (Years 3 to 6) - Ms Robyn Dowding.
  • Thursday 18 February – What is a NAIS Sports Leader? How does Sports Leadership benefit your child? (Years 7 & 8) - Miss Lauren Kenny.

Thank you to all the parents who signed up for ECAs online. It went smoothly and parents will be receiving their confirmed ECAs via email on, or before, Monday, or you can check directly via the CHQ link. If you need to use our Late Buses, please go back to Firefly (‘Choosing your ECAs’) and follow the link to the Late Buses. Please remember that this term, we have a one-off Late Bus fee of HK$300 per term, per ECA. Please remember that students doing Squad Training can also use the Late Buses.

The security and well-being of your children is our number one priority. After reviewing our systems for picking up children – either from school or from the buses – our Head of Pastoral, Mr Boyd, would like to share with you our updated guidelines for pick-up arrangements. This is very important, so please read the attached letter from Mr Boyd and the Guidelines carefully. If you have any questions, please contact Mr Boyd at david.boyd@nais.hk

VIRTUAL TOUR OF OUR SCHOOL – Please review - http://www.youvisit.com/tour/71647/93998

We have created a Virtual Tour of our school to allow families coming from overseas to “tour" our school online. This tour shows images of some of our students so, before we post this to our website, I wanted to get your feedback. You may also find it a fun way to show our school to proud grandparents!

Our Primary Curriculum newsletters for Term 2 have just been uploaded to Firefly. These newsletters give you an overview of what your child will be studying in each of their subjects this term between now and Chinese New Year.

For our first Primary Assembly of 2016, Charissa (4B) played through her nerves to show us all how much progress she’s made on the flute. We should ever underestimate what courage it takes to perform in front of 600 people!

Our Assembly started with our 2Ds introducing “The Inventors”. Well done to all the children in Miss Johnson’s class. We’ve uploaded a video to “Daily News” in the Parents section of Firefly.

Finally, we celebrated achieveent and effort in PE in our Star of the Week. Well done to:

Year 1: Hannah Liu, Leon Smeets, Charlotte Francis, Asia Thompson, Lili Dryden

Year 2: Vivaan Madnani, Saffron Haigh, Charlotte Clough, Jonathan Poon, Daisy Deacon-Potter

Year 3: Rafi Mithani, Tawfiq Kamhawi, Jacopo Carazzai, Rainie Wong, Jayden Coan

Year 4: Tom Incledon, Summer Marner, Ashton Thatcher, Ananya Gracias, Andrew Lam

Year 5: Oscar Wong, Kosuke Tsuda, Emma Standing, Luke Incledon

Year 6: Kia Letcher, Tina Ma, Charlie Dier

SECONDARY ASSEMBLY – New Years Resolutions, Sports Leadership and Commendation Certificates for PE

Mr Boyd led the Secondary Assembly today, and asked the Year 7s and 8s to think about their new resolutions for the year ahead. He reminded them to talk with their House Tutors about setting realistic goals and to use the Mentoring Programme. Miss Kenny then introduced the Sports Leadership programme which will be encouraging all secondary students to develop leadership roles within the school. Miss Kenny will be holding a Parent Workshop on student leadership on 18 February. High Commendation certificates were awarded for PE to:

Year 7: Isaac Voon, Annabel Lai

Year 8: Peony Hong, Michael Chen

NORD ANGLIA ASIA GAMES (NAAG) - Watch this space!

One of the amazing things about being part of such a large family of schools, is the opportunity to collaborate and compete with students from across our regional and global network. This year, we will be hosting the inaugural Nord Anglia Asia Games and welcoming schools from across the region. More news next Friday!

Finally, good luck to our honed athletes who will be competing this evening in the PTA-organised Teachers versus Dads Basketball. I’m sure that it will be a sporting extravaganza! A match update will follow next week.
