Staff Profile: Tim Barnett

Tim Barnett

Head of Year 5

With my father being a Youth Worker and councilor in my home town in Gloucestershire, England, I have had, and continue to have, a brilliant role model to follow. My mother also volunteered at the youth club and so I spent a large amount of my infancy and childhood at the various youth clubs. For the teenagers who attended, I became almost like a mascot as I travelled with the club members on various trips, sporting events and workshops. I was surrounded by such inspirational, caring, dedicated and compassionate people working with children and young adults that I too developed a passion for helping others. I would help out as much as I could and, as I got older, it was said that I was destined to be a teacher.

Whist studying for my Degree in English Literature and Ancient History, I worked on Summer camps, coached various sports and also enjoyed volunteering in local primary and secondary schools. Once I completed my degree, I joined the learning support unit of a secondary school where I gained valuable experience of working with children with a wide range of learning differences. It will be of no surprise to any students or colleagues who know me that I also worked in a museum! It has been claimed that I manage to get history into all my lessons (but only the really interesting and unusual parts!). Although I had enjoyed teaching in a secondary setting, I knew I wanted to teach a range of subjects and that primary teaching was for me.

As I already had experience of teaching, I was accepted and completed the Graduate Teacher Programme through the University of Gloucestershire. After completion, I joined Robinswood Primary School in Gloucester for 7 brilliant years, working alongside and learning from some extraordinary teachers. During this time, I was also PE coordinator and coached a range of teams from rugby to cross-country to athletics to success. I still receive updates from the staff and children on their continuing achievements! Another role that has helped me grow as a teacher and a leader was being the Newly Qualified Teacher mentor and then coordinator for two schools. In this role, I successfully supported new teachers in their first year of teaching.

After travelling and exploring the world as much as possible during school holidays, I knew I wanted to work in America. I was very excited to earn a place teaching at BISH. In my time out of school, I enjoy a range of sports and training. I was a keen rower for 12 years in the U.K, with the highlights being competed at Henley Royal Regatta and the Home International Regatta. Here in Houston, I have switched to running and I enjoy training to compete in various races and relay team events all over Texas and USA. Being able to train in the sunshine all year round is superb!

This school is different to all others I have worked in because of the wonderful opportunity I have to work with students and staff from the many nationalities that make our BISH community.
