Middle School Teacher - English and Drama

I was born and raised in the beautifully diverse and multi-cultural country of South Africa. This is where my love for learning and teaching began. Whilst studying a Bachelor of Social Science in Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, I worked with disadvantaged communities, developing and delivering educational programs for young people. It was this community-based intervention that showed me the positive impact of education on even the most impoverished children and that ultimately inspired me to pursue teaching and a career in Educational Psychology for the long-term.

In 2006, I emigrated to the United Kingdom and completedmy qualifications as a teacher, attaining a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of Bedfordshire. I taught throughout my training andhave 12 years of experiencewith children of all ages, as well as some experience teaching literacy to adults. I worked at Oxford & Cherwell Valley College, Abingdon College and Central Bedfordshire College where I gained a wealth of experience teaching a variety of subjects at different levels. I progressed from tutor to teacher and was promoted to the Head of Student Services at Bedfordshire College, where I was the Designated Safeguarding Lead, head of the front of house services and responsible for overseeing the college-wide tutorial program. But the highlight of my career has been working as an English Teacher and leading the Senior Drama Production at a thriving preparatory school in Buckinghamshire. I enjoy educating and inspiring young people in the classroom and watching them grow in confidence to become independent thinkers and learners.

My family is extremely important to me and moving to Houston with my husband and two sons, aged 3 and 9, is an exciting new chapter in our careers and lives. I have always had a love for travel- frequently visiting family in Naples, Florida in the summer, with regular visits to the Mediterranean Sea and of course the very special trips to my hometownin South Africa!  We love the sunshine and sea and have shared many happy holidays on the beautiful beaches of Greece, Spain and Cyprus, where we got married 11 years ago. Perhaps one day we might even swap the beach towels for snowboards! When I am not teaching, I enjoy reading, cooking, swimming and being outdoors with my boys. We are a close family and enjoy being fully involved in the life of our school and look forward to joining everyone in Houston.
