Moving to Houston to live and work was a fantastic opportunity for me, both personally and professionally.  I was intrigued by the challenge of working and living in a new country; teaching such a diverse group of children; and opening myself up to new life experiences.  I had lived all my life in the UK, studying both my degree and PGCE at the University of Worcester.  After gaining my PGCE in 2010, I taught at a Primary School on the outskirts of Birmingham for three years.  During that time, I taught in Year 6 and held the post of ICT Co-ordinator.

Houston was a city that I had never visited, but the more I read about it, the more I knew it would be somewhere I would enjoy working and living.  I was right!

With my father being a Youth Worker and councilor in my home town in Gloucestershire, England, I have had, and continue to have, a brilliant role model to follow. My mother also volunteered at the youth club and so I spent a large amount of my infancy and childhood at the various youth clubs. For the teenagers who attended, I became almost like a mascot as I travelled with the club members on various trips, sporting events and workshops. I was surrounded by such inspirational, caring, dedicated and compassionate people working with children and young adults that I too developed a passion for helping others. I would help out as much as I could and, as I got older, it was said that I was destined to be a teacher.

While studying for my BA in business in Belgium I taught both Dutch and English, mostly to children through Berlitz International. I loved this so much that after returning to the Netherlands I went back to school to work on my BA in teaching.

In the Netherlands, I had worked both full-time and part-time for several years when I was told there were schools, outside the Netherlands, that needed Dutch teachers to teach Dutch.

The one school that stood out to me, now eight years ago, was the British International School of Houston. To me, having been educated at a British school myself, this seemed a perfect opportunity for me to broaden my horizon and to help Dutch children abroad to have the education they need.

After completing my Biology degree and PGCE in 1999, I started teaching Year 1 and 2 in a rural village school near Bath. Being the oldest child of four, I always knew that I wanted to be  a teacher and I was very good at organising my siblings! During my time teaching in Bath, I met my husband David, and in 2001 I moved up to York. I taught in Selby, a larger inner city school, which was a great contrast to my previous school. After a year, we moved to Cheshire, North-West England, for David’s job. I taught Reception, Year 1 and 2, and took various management roles before being appointed Senior Teacher. My daughter, Annabel, was born in 2008 and shortly afterwards we relocated to London.

In London, I taught at a large Primary school in Claygate, in Years 1-6, and was appointed Assistant Head. In 2012 David’s job took us to The Hague, The Netherlands, where my son William was born. I taught at the International School, The Haagsche Schoolvereeniging, teaching different classes from Reception to Year 6. This was a great introduction to the IPC, International Primary Curriculum, and teaching international students from all over the world. In 2014 we moved to Houston, where I was excited to have the opportunity to teach at BISHouston. Now, I am looking forward to the exciting developments of the curriculum and teaching in our new location.

I 've just completed  my seventh year of teaching and worked at the British College of Brazil in Sao Paulo for the past three years. I loved the many incredible opportunities I had to travel within South America. It was hard to leave such an incredible country, but I am very excited about my new adventure moving to Houston.
