Dr Jamie Frost at BSKL

BSKL were very proud to host Dr Frost this week. A sure sign of things returning back to normal. Dr Jamie Frost is the creator of the Dr frost website which all of our students use in addition to over a million other staff and students around the world. He graduated from Oxford and completed his degree and PhD in Computer Science before choosing to become a mathematics teacher.

He spent the whole day with us at BSKL. Students were extremely excited to meet him and see him walking around the school building. The day started with a visit to year 7 maths classrooms where he answered questions about mathematics and saw how students used the Dr Frost website. He conducted some staff training and showed us the new version of his site including increased and improved functionality. The highlight of the day was the delivery of a whole school assembly about how and why he created his site and how he had used hard maths in real life. Dr Frost did a live audience example and then shared his favourite equation which uses Euler’s constant (Dr Frost was pleasantly surprised that the constant was recognised by one of our Y7 students)

Dr Frost

After presenting awards to students at the top of the Dr Frost Leaderboard he was inundated with a queue of students lining up to the top of the theatre stairs for autographs and calculator signings; he said that in all the schools he had he ‘had never signed so many calculators!’.

Once the shock of his visit was over he enjoyed a lunch in the school canteen surrounded by school staff and students. In the afternoon Dr Frost conducted two workshops on a ‘Robot path counting’ activity requiring the use of combinatorics with some Year 9 and Year 10 students.

Dr Frost was overwhelmed with the energy and enthusiasm of the students and would love to return to BSKL when he next does an Asia tour.
