WSC is an English academic competition that centres around four events: Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholars Bowl and Scholars Challenge. Debate is a hugely important part of the event and requires teams to both work together and present individually to get both a team and individual score. This is all done in English, and many of the teams they were competing against were English first language speakers. This was a great chance to continue to develop there already impressive levels of spoken English. Dora Ye and Thomas Zhang both received medals for their debating.

The Collaborative writing works in a similar fashion to the debate but in this there is only one chance to submit a piece of persuasive writing. Gogo Ji and Nicole Zhou both received medals for their writing.

The other two areas are academic events, the Bowl being a team event and the Challenge being an individual event, which test their knowledge of the six subject areas: History, Science, Social Studies, Literature, Art & Music and Special Area (Black Market this year). Dora Ye, Kelly Zhang and Gregory Pan all received medals for their individual efforts and two of the team received medals for their team effort.

Whilst in Melbourne, the students did get a few hours to go and explore Melbourne and spent a day visiting a wildlife park and an old gold mining town. Allowing them to experience some of the diversity and culture that Melbourne had to offer.

Overall it was a great experience for both the students and teachers and one which they will take a lot away from. Unfortunately, the teams did not qualify to compete in New York, but they will be putting themselves forward to compete in next year’s competition – along with 36 other students within NACIS.
