Nick West's New Semester Message

Gong Xi Fai Cai, Happy New Year to you all! Being part of a bilingual school, it is so important to respect cultural celebrations and as a privileged visitor to your country we should show this to our staff and students. On our professional training day on Monday I dressed up as ‘Caishen’ and delivered Hongbao to all members of our Chinese community. As part of a very special school with international-mindedness, we should take every opportunity to make it visible. Sharing celebrations is a great way to learn about other cultures and appreciate difference.

Our staff had a very productive day on Monday with all teachers working hard together planning for the semester ahead and ensuring the learning for our children will be exciting and enhance their progress. Thinking and discussing how children learn is important and sharing best practice can greatly enhance this. Over the next semester our teachers will be collaborating even closer together with peer observations and joint planning and teaching opportunities. Professional learning days are a key aspect to a school’s success.

Any ambitious school requests and seeks external feedback on how well it is doing in order to improve the outcomes for its students. Soon we will welcome two colleagues from Nord Anglia Education, based in Oxford, who are completing a quality assurance visit, which we invited them to do. Our regional education team will also be here to join them in this process. The purpose is to examine our self-evaluation document and school development plan and evaluate if we have made the correct judgements and have the right topics of improvement for the school. We really welcome this opportunity as it is an external viewpoint who can help guide us as well as celebrate successes.


This will be the final major piece of information, along with the Parent Satisfaction Survey, that we will use to look for adding improvements over the next months and year. Schools must collect as much data as possible and analyse it effectively to build a strong school and achieve success in collaboration and clear communication with their community. We believe we are doing this at NACIS Shanghai.
