On Wednesday 20 March, International Day of Happiness, Grade 10 CAS students paid a visit to Grades 1-4 to spread some joy and make the younger students smile.
Their first stop was the library. Grade 10 students spent some time with Grade 1 students, helping them to choose books and reading with them. Next up was the Grade 1 and 2 classrooms. As Grade 2 students were settling back in after lunchtime, Grade 10 arrived to play some games with the younger students, show them a fun dance and chat to them about their days. Finally, Grade 10 stopped by the library again in the afternoon to meet with Grade 4 students. This meeting was especially meaningful as the older Primary students confidently chatted with Grade 10 students about the books that they like to read and what their routine is like in Secondary School.
Grade 10 really enjoyed spending time with Primary students and it gave them an opportunity to develop their communication and social skills. They had to challenge themselves, take risks and push themselves outside of their comfort zones to interact with and engage the younger students. Grade 10 students commented afterwards about how they got an insight into a day in the life of a teacher. They joked that they appreciate their teachers so much more now, as they felt exhausted by the end of the busy day spent entertaining Primary students!
All in all it was a very meaningful experience for Primary and Secondary students alike and Grade 10 CAS students would like to work more with Primary students in future.
