NACIS Sports News March 2019

U11 Girls Football

On Saturday 23 March, the Under 11 Girls’ football team took part in their second tournament of the year, at SUIS Hongqiao. The team have been working very hard at practice and this was clear from the very first game. NACIS defended very well with Cindy Zhou (4 Cedar) and Betty Yu (4 Elm) exceptional at the back. The team won 1-0 with a great goal from team captain, Nataly Yin (5 Willow). The day continued with a draw against SUIS Hongqiao followed by a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of the excellent SUIS Shangyin team. Having qualified for the semi-finals, the girls fought for every ball and ran themselves into the ground, but were unlucky to lose to the eventual winners, SUIS Hongqiao. However, the girls overcame their disappointment in the 3rd/4th Play off game by beating off the challenge of Song Ching Ling with Nataly Yin finding the net again. The coaches and parents were particularly happy with the progress the girls made since last year. The squad is getting bigger and it must be only a matter of time before we see the NACIS Under 11 Girls team in a final! Well done to all the players and a special thanks to the parents for their excellent support.

Squad members:  Ivy Zhou, Betty Yu (4Elm), Arya Peng, Angela Liu, Amy Wang(4Oak), Moana Han, Cindy Zhou (4 Cedar), Anya Lam (4 Willow), Alice Wu, Fay Huang, Nataly Yin (5 Willow)

U13 Girls Football

Our U13 girls entered their first ever SSSA tournament on Saturday 23 March 2019 and it was certainly one to remember!

In our first game we hosted a competent Shanghai High School Team with Kelly Ji (6 Oak) and Jessica Wang (6 Cedar) scoring goals in a dominant 2-0 victory. Our second game saw us compete against a very physical and competent SUIS Gubei team, there was nothing between the teams with the final score being 0-0. Our third game saw us compete against a very strong SUIS Wan-Yuan side, with Jessica Wang (6 Cedar) scoring a sublime free-kick and Kelly Ji (6 Oak) again finishing well we were able to win 2-0. A special mention must go to the 6Beech trio Cherry Shi, Selina Chen & Chloe Cai who were excellent in defense, alongside some outstanding goalkeeping from Wendy Zhao (6 Oak). The girls played there fourth game and third in a row against SUIS Jiaoke and battled hard to earn a 1-0 victory thanks to a long range effort from Jessica Wang (6 Cedar). We tied our final group game 0-0 with a very strong SCL side thanks to more excellent goalkeeping from Wendy Zhao.

The girls finished top of the table and through to the final against a strong SUIS Gubei team. In the final the girls battled extremely hard and were unlucky to lose the game 0-1, and finished runners-up for the tournament.

Over the course of the morning the girls showed excellent work-rate, determination and more importantly played with a smile.

A big well-done to tournament MVP Jessica Wang (6Cedar) and team MVP Wendy Zhao (6Oak).

Well done to all involved, and a big thank you to all the parents that supported the team through the morning.

U15 Boys Football

The U15 Boys Football team finished third in their SSSA League season, by winning 3 games and losing 2 in their SSSA season.

The boys started the season well with a home win against SUIS Wan Yuan 7-3 with goals coming from William Bu(4), Ryan Wang (2) and Gary Yan. The second game saw us travel to Song Ching Ling winning the game comfortably 5-1 with goals from William Bu, Jack Da, Bruce Chai, Gary Yan and Ryan Wang.

Our third game of the season saw us travel to Shanghai High School where we were over-confident and a poor performance saw us comfortably beat. Our final league game of the season we hosted SUIS Gubei, where the game unfortunately had to be stopped early due to bad light, we surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose 2-3 with goals coming from William Bu and Gary Yan.

We entered finals day in third positon with a semi-final against SUIS Gubei. Once again we started extremely well and led 2-0. However, SUIS Gubei battled back well and tied the game at 2-2. With only a penalty shoot-out to seperate the sides Gubei held there composure and advanced to the final beating a strong SHSID Side. The NACIS boys comfortably won their third place play-off against SUIS Wan Yuan finishing third and taking home a bronze trophy in their first season.

U15 Boys Basketball
On Saturday 23 March the U15 boys basketball team travelled to YK Pao Secondary to take part in their biggest tournament to date. The tournament was played both inside and outside and spanned the whole day from 9am to 5pm testing the boys endurance and providing them with an invaluable learning experience.
The first game was against a very tough opponent in SHSID first team. The boys had to play outside and put in an outstanding effort on a small court which did not suit their style of play. Despite a hard fought effort, the boys ended up succumbing 19-12. Not the start the boys had wanted, however, they played the eventual champions in their very first game and should be proud of their efforts.
The boys were then keen to bounce back from their disappointing start to the tournament and did so in style. They played an expansive game and ended up beating HD school 34-12. Special mention goes out to Sky Xiong who had an excellent game and was very consistent with his lay ups.
Moving forward, the boys were aware they had to win all of their games to progress into the next stage of the tournament.  SHSID 2 were a very capable team and a victory was needed by both teams as the winner was likely to progress into the semi-finals. NACIS played an incredible defensive game and only conceded 4 points as they went on to win 12-4. Special mention must go to Oscar Hong who had an outstanding game and Ryan Wang who worked so diligently in defence.
NACIS vs. Pinghe
Our last game of the group stage was against Pinghe School. At this stage, the boys were looking fatigued from a hard day of basketball. However, they continued their winning streak as a solid team effort saw the boys snatch a 21-15 victory.
Semi-final – NACIS vs YK Pao
The boys then faced the winner of the other group in YK Pao. NACIS had beaten YK Pao twice in the previous tournament, but they still had a difficult challenge in front of them. The boys pulled together and worked incredibly hard to gain an impressive 23-13 victory. Special mention to Oscar Hong and Eric Ye who were fantastic in defence and under the basket.

Final- NACIS vs. SHSID 1
In the final, the boys were to play SHSID1 again and had the opportunity to gain revenge for their earlier defeat at the start of the tournament. The boys played extremely well and were leading 11-10 at half time. However, a tough day of basketball and an impressive SHSID 1 team were a bit too much for the boys as they ended up being defeated 27-17. Special mention must go to Joe Ni who scored numerous 3 pointers to keep NACIS in the game. The boys did extremely well to finish runners up in a difficult and very competitive tournament, an achievement they should be extremely proud of.

U15 Girls Basketball

Our U15 Girls basketball team took part in their first ever SSSA tournament at Shanghai High School on Saturday 16 March.

A very young team compromising of girls from Grade 7 & 8 played two games against Shanghai High School and SUIS Gubei. After a slow start against SUIS Gubei the girls showed excellent resilience and attitude losing to a very organized SUIS Gubei side 14-6. The second game we played against a very strong Shanghai High School with the girls defending well, they were beaten 14-3 against a very experienced side.
The girls have shown excellent progress so far this year, making extensive progress in their technical play and are now starting to develop their game understanding.

Sky Shi picked up the MVP award for the team.

Table Tennis

SUIS hosted another successful, student lead Table Tennis Tournament on Saturday 16 March. Students had to arrange the schedule together and umpire each other’s games, meaning it was an activity for the students lead by the students. All students stepped up to the challenge and worked well in collaboration with other schools to make sure we had a successful run tournament.

During the competition NACIS competed in the U13 boys with Baron Jiang and Jason Liu; as well as the boys we also entered 4 girls in the tournament: Apple Wang, Kelly Ji, Tiffany Tao and Kelly Zhou (her first ever competitive tournament) and the U15s boy Tournament with Johnny Yang.

All the students learnt a lot during the competition and had a chance to develop their match play. Johnny came second in got through his U15 pool to enter the championship pool where he came up against some very good competition. A special mention goes to Baron and Apple Wang in the boys U13s tournament. They claimed a 1st and 2nd place with Baron beating Apple 15-13 in a very tense decisive game of the championship pool. We would also like to extend my gratitude Also to the parents who came along to the competition to support all individuals.

On 30 April, our girls will be going back for another tournament where we hope to bring home more success.
