On Monday 8 April, Grade 5 arrived at school bright, early and eager to head off on their travels. It was the long-awaited day of our trip to Beijing. Although students were asked to arrive for 6.30am, the keenest students were walking down the courtyard before 6am. They would not be so full of energy come Friday!
Thanks to a superstar performance from Ms. Miki, the security staff at Shanghai Hongqiao rolled out the red carpet for our arrival. We had our own parking spaces, entrance gates and security checks. This ensured we made the perfect start to our trip.
Once we arrived in Beijing, our 8 groups were divided in half; 1 half headed to Beijing City Centre and the other half set off to Huanghua Cheng. Each group took part in a range of activities at each location during their two days there.
In Beijing, the students were treated to a delicious Peking duck dinner. The duck was carved in front of them as we shared dinner together. We stayed in a beautiful city centre hotel where we were all based from. Other activities included a hike around Jinshan Hill (here we had an amazing view of the Forbidden City); a walking tour around Hutong where we had lunch with a local family and an incredible performance at an acrobatics school.
Over in Huanghua Cheng, camping was the main activity. The students battled some freezing conditions by working together to assemble their tent. We then enjoyed a camp dinner before getting some much needed sleep. The next morning, the students set off on our 6km hike along parts of The Great Wall – this experience will stay with the students forever. The weather was perfect and the sights were breathtaking.
We all arrived safely back to school on Friday ready for a very restful weekend!
