On Thursday 30th May, over 150 students performed to packed theatre of delighted parents. The showcase was a chance for students to show the fruit of all their hard work during Semester 2 ECAs.

The showcase is start with the choir singing “Obwisana”, be accompanied by the African drum and the maracas, and children’s voice is full with power, and later choir sang a Chinese song “Pear flower bloom again”with choir member Justin’s guitar playing. You can see children’s face expression and feel they are full engaged. It made audience indulge in their beautiful voices.

The Nacis Jazz Band performed 3 famous tunes on the summer showcase. Moanin, a passionate piece from Art Blakey on the opening piece for Jazz band. Second tune, Moon river is one of the famous jazz balled in the history. It sounds like people dancing in the sky of river, and feeling so soft and smooth. The performance end on the piece of You are the sunshine of my life from the great Stevie Wonder, and it brought sunshine with much joy to the audience at that night.

In between other acts, Grade 6 Drama students thrilled us with short comedy sketches. The scenes included 10 people stuck in a lift, 3 boys who don’t know how to dance at the school disco and two girls who have fallen out but don’t know why. These expressive performances, delivered in English and with great confidence, were professionally performed. In the second act, Grade 7-8 students showed an extract of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, taking on a challenging text and showing some great talent and perseverance.

It has been a busy year for our orchestras, with NACIS Orchestra attending the first annual NAPAC Orchestra Festival, and the junior orchestra attending 5 events outside of school. Members of both orchestras took part in the Minhang performing arts Competition, which has further sharpened their skill. And we know many of them got rewards.

During the showcase the NACIS Orchestra played; ‘Overture to Die Fledermaus’, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Good News is Spreading in Beijing.’. The Junior Orchestra challenged themselves by playing; ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King and The Toreadors flawlessly. Once more, they are invited to perform for French Festival 2019 in the new academic year.

The Chinese instrument ensemble members performed two pieces of music. The first one is the ECA group song <Big Fish>. The second song is duet song <Right of imperial world>, played by Siri and Apple. The performance went very well and Ms Jade expressed her pride.

For our Summer ECA showcase, the musical theatre society performed a selection of scenes and songs from Oliver! The Musical and Annie. The students demonstrated a high level of confidence and skill in their singing, dancing and acting while thoroughly entertaining the audience with numbers such as I’d Do Anything (Oliver!) and It’s a Hard Knock Life (Annie). Fantastic solo performances were given by many of the students and in especially Wendy Wang in 8 Sycamore who enthralled the audience with her rendition of As Long as he Needs Me. The students in the Musical Theatre Society have worked extremely hard this semester and have developed into enthusiastic and talented young performers.
