Since 1995, Ms. Gu has worked in both primary English teaching and related management roles in Minhang district, Shanghai, where she has served as counselor of school young pioneer team, director of the general office, vice principal, secretary and a principal. She has also participated in social management as a representative of district party and people's congress of the town, etc.

Since 1999, she has participated in two overall transformational reforms, namely, "the Shanghai National Curriculum" and "the National New Basic Education Experiment" as the principal assistant, vice principal, principal, secretary and "core administrator of the school" or "first responsible person". Since 2011, Ms. Gu has led her team to create a locally rooted and internationally oriented education reform project on the design and practice of primary international understanding education curriculum, which was listed as "Key Planning Project in Shanghai education" in 2013. This research is based on the principle of "enabling each student to develop soundly and each teacher work wisely and happily". It aims to cultivate contemporary Chinese pupils intrinsic explicit "rules of etiquette, the national spirit, scientific quality and humanities”. She expects to cultivate world citizens with Chinese characteristics, global vision and international competitiveness.
