Our students and staff parading around the school grounds in their national costumes, flags held aloft, the parent run international food stalls waiting to serve up treats from around the world – these all brought a broad smile to my face. Our students excelled in the many country performances on stage and the concluding fashion show.
For me, what makes our International Day so special is not just the sights and sounds of the fifty different nationalities we have on roll – it’s the knowledge that underlying these celebrations is a long-cherished mindset of internationalism. At Regents we have a way of thinking and a sense of spirit that encourages our students to be proud of their national heritage without being nationalistic. Our students become knowledgeable and open-minded about other cultures, and it’s that which makes them fearless – they are unafraid to hold and share opinions. I love to hear the good-natured, cross-cultural discussion and debate, always carried out with respect and often great humour.
This is an aspect of education that our students and parents value enormously. So, however much I enjoy our annual International Day, I take even greater pleasure in knowing that every day is an international day at Regents International School Pattaya.
