‘Mary Poppins’ comes to Year Five

‘Mary Poppins’ comes to Year Five Number 17, Cherry Tree Lane; a middle-class and really quite proper residence in post-Victorian London was the scene for this year’s Year Five Production. Following a carousel of unsuccessful nannies for the mischievous Banks children who reside there, a final desperate advertisement draws the expertise of Mary Poppins, a mysterious and enchanting young woman.

Mary fits the criteria perfectly: A cheery disposition, rosy cheeks and lover of playing games.

The children of Year Five told this famous and classic story magnificently. Traditional songs such as ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’ and ‘Chim Chimney’ all contributed to help the ‘medicine go down’ in this uplifting musical.

A huge effort was made by all to ensure the original script was followed as closely as possible, with songs and dances adapted from the famous scenes of the 1964 musical starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures. Children Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “anything can happen if you let it.” Just as she arrived on the ‘winds from the east’, she disappears on to a new venture, once her work at Cherry Tree Lane is done and the family are all united again.
