Celebrating cultural diversity is an area the Year One children have learned a lot about through the Integrated Curriculum topic ‘Golden Celebrations’.

Some will call it ‘partying’ but we call it learning, then partying! But how is this possible? And more importantly, how is this done?

At The International School of Moscow we believe that teaching children through a contextualised learning approach is by far the best way in which children will be able to retain information, understand new concepts and, more importantly, make connections between new knowledge and experiences that they have had.

In Year One, we like to teach and learn according to this principle, hence why, the teachers in Year One taught the children about the many religions and some of the celebrations that happen around the world in the form of a Christian wedding ceremony and party.

The day started off with the children performing the song ‘Count on Me’ during assembly, dressed in their bridal gowns and bow ties.

The Assembly hall was quickly turned into a church where the wedding ceremonies took place. The children were married by one of the members of the class dressed as a vicar, two children performed as ring bearers and the rest as brides and grooms.

The parents attended the wedding party dressed in their party outfits too. The party started with the children performing their ‘first dance’ to the song ‘Hero’. Following this, everyone went to one of the classrooms which was transformed into a lavish banquet hall. There, the children read speeches that they had written for each other and gave toasts. Just when we thought this day could not get any better, we were surprised by two of our parents bringing in a two-tier wedding cake with a bride and groom figurines on the top, beautifully decorated with a pink bow. This gave the children the opportunity to cut the cake in pairs, just like in a real wedding.

To finish off, the children danced at the disco and had their picture taken in a Wedding photo booth. This was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime event. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who made this day possible.
