ZYGMUN Model United Nations

As I began preparing for the virtual conference, I realised that it would be completely different from the first event I attended. It was more serious, and required much more thorough planning.

I had good reason to be a little nervous about ZYGMUN 2020. Aside from the fact that I am not involved with MUN at ISM, this was only my second ever MUN event and, to top it all off, along with three others from my year group, I was the youngest there.

I’m happy to say that, upon completion of all the documents needed, I was not only feeling immensely proud of myself for tackling the tasks so efficiently and in advance. 

I was also overjoyed with the amount of information I learned about Mexico, the country I would be representing. I’m pleased to say I also found out about policy statements and draft resolutions, and how to actually write them.  

I was part of the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (GA4.)  Our two topics were ‘Creating and Strengthening Effective Sexual Education Systems in all Member States’ and ‘Eradicating the Use of Torture as a Means of Interrogation.’ The debates were very heated, and it was fantastic to learn more about each country’s stance and the two topics in general. Our chairs were absolutely amazing, and carried out their responsibilities in a fantastic way.

The feeling of not only attending the first ever virtual MUN conference, but also seeing and hearing the people who I am sure will be the next great minds of our generation, was unforgettable. Everyone was attentive, supportive, and friendly, yet the temperature in the room definitely rose when discussions began.

These two days were two of the busiest and most exciting days of my life. My day began and ended with debating, and it was a great way to spend Thursday and Friday. There were a few internet issues, but they did not hinder the proceedings massively, and the positive outcomes from the event more than made up for it. Thank you to all the organisers: the event was wonderful.
