In 2020 ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) will, for the first time, be setting up a public practical music examinations centre in Russia at The International School of Moscow. To celebrate both this exciting new development and the UK-Russia Year of Music 2019, ‘The Big Sing’ event will be taking place on Thursday, the 26th September at 7pm at The Moscow International House of Music, Chamber Hall.

The event will feature a choir consisting of students from a number of Moscow schools, the launch presentation of the ABRSM music practical examinations in Russia, delivered by Helen Coleman (ABRSM’s Head of Global Operations), and individual musical performances, as well as a special video message from British composer John Rutter CBE.

'The Big Sing' will celebrate the strong cultural and musical links between Russia and the UK as part of the UK-Russia Year of Music 2019, bringing together musicians from both countries. The evening will see a choir perform two pieces by Russian composer Alexander Borodin, and British choral composer John Rutter.

"2019/2020 is planning to be a very special year for the Music Department at ISM. Firstly, the opportunity for our students and the wider community to be part of the UK-Russia Year of Music 2019 through ‘The Big Sing’ and secondly, the long-term motivational benefit that ABRSM practical music exams will deliver to music education both within ISM and in the local music community", said James Langford, Head of Music at The International School of Moscow.

For the past five years, the International School of Moscow has been offering theoretical ABRSM examinations and from June 2020, our students will have the chance to take ABRSM's internationally-renowned practical music examinations.

Established in 1889, ABRSM now delivers over 600,000 assessments in more than 90 countries. The examinations have become valued and trusted measures of musical progress all over the world.

ABRSM assessments provide a globally recognised measure of musical attainment. They take into account the full range of musical skills, along with related knowledge and understanding. This enables candidates to continue developing their musicianship and following their musical journey - wherever it may eventually lead. John Holmes, Chief Examiner at ABRSM

The practical examinations are delivered by a team of highly experienced musicians. Helen Coleman will be joining ‘The Big Sing’ from London to give a presentation about ABRSM as well as holding a Q&A session.
