Dear DCIS Parents and Guardians,
We have had a very positive start to the new academic year and, despite the long summer break, our students are keen and eager to continue with their learning. In particular, Year 7 has settled well into life in the Secondary School and I have been pleased to welcome many new students to all our year groups; there is a real vibrancy around the classrooms and corridors. I am delighted with the growth in student numbers we continue to witness and build upon.
Before our students joined us, staff returned for a week of preparation. This year we are introducing a straightforward, yet highly effective, teaching and learning strategy. An essential element of this is around challenging our students to be the very best that they can be. I set the teachers their own challenge of making sure the first lessons set the tone for the year. We want our students to believe that, through hard work, perseverance and reflection, the sky’s the limit for their experience here at DCIS.
One of our key indicators is the external examination results. Overall we were very pleased with the outcomes for our Year 11 students as they move on to the next stage of their educational journey. Some of the highlights are listed below:
- English Language: 88% A* - C
- Mathematics: 83% A* - C
- Geography: 83% A* - C
- History: 100% A* - C
- Global Citizenship: 86% A* - C
I am also delighted to announce that DCIS students have been officially recognised by Edexcel for accomplishing the following:
- IGCSE Physics – Highest Mark in Singapore
- IGCSE Geography – Highest Mark in Singapore
- IGCSE Mathematics B – Highest Mark in Singapore
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our IGCSE students on these excellent results; it makes us all very proud. As staff, we are now undertaking the vital task of analysing the results to give us a greater level of focus when looking at our ongoing programme of continuous improvement.
The theme of challenge is also upmost in our minds when we are looking at the extra-curricular element of school life. This week, you will have received a notification of the DCIS 2017 Schedule of Residential Trips. These opportunities are available for all of our Year 6 to Year 11 students and will challenge our students to undertake a diverse range of service initiatives. I am excited to be able to announce these (and our Year 5 trip in due course) and we will be releasing more details shortly.
I look forward to working with staff, students and parents throughout this academic year and I will be delighted if you get in touch with any feedback or questions.
Mr. John Smith
Head of Secondary School
