Our Upper Primary students follow the English National Curriculum appropriately modified to provide an international dimension using the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). English and mathematics are regarded as the foundation subjects and receive the largest time allocation from the class teacher, with daily lessons. Our teachers use the IPC to deliver the curriculum in science, history, geography, design technology and art in a thematic way.
In the class room our teachers use dynamic marking which happens live and provides students with instant feedback on areas of work to focus on. Our teachers are continuously assessing and tracking individual progress, ensuring that learning in personalised and opportunities are not missed.
It is important for us that our students are able to think globally, work well in groups and be confident enough to take their own path where necessary. Our curriculum gives students the skills and knowledge they will need for the transition into Secondary School and their further education, as well as making a strong and positive contribution to society. As an all-through school, we benefit from opportunities to make the transition from Primary School to Secondary School smoother. In Year 6, specific transition days are held throughout the year so children can get a taste of what secondary school is like and feel confident and supported moving up to Secondary School.
Our students benefit from daily Mandarin lessons and the Upper Primary Mandarin Programme provides opportunities for students to gain knowledge in both verbal and written communication. Our curriculum has been developed specifically for DCIS students and designed to incorporate the attainment targets in essential knowledge, key skills and breadth of learning in Mandarin. Our students in Year 5 and Year 6 are encouraged to take the Youth Chinese Test (The YCT language proficiency test from HanBan).
At DCIS we believe that music can play a transformational role in your child’s education, promoting cultural literacy, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. In the Upper Primary School our students enjoy weekly music lessons, delivered through the Juilliard Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme. Our computer science teachers teach ICT in our computer suites and Physical Education and swimming are taught by our dedicated PE teachers.
