Dear Parents and Carers,

It was great to see so many of you at the DCA Christmas Fayre on Saturday afternoon. The rain was a little more persistent that most afternoons at the moment but it didn’t seem to effect the general festive mood – in fact my sponge throwing appointment was cut short, so not all bad! Many thanks to the staff and students involved in the Christmas concert, the weather certainly gave them a challenging backdrop but the playing and singing were a great way to get into the festive spirit.

We had our last House Days of the term this week, my thanks to the Music Department and Ms Mayes for running the activities this week, thank you also to Mr. Liperis for his continued hard work in this area. Mr. Jury brought in a Maths communicator, Zoe Griffiths, who enraptured our Secondary students with her presentation on the wonders of the one global language – Maths.

Year 5 came back from their trip to Telunas on Friday afternoon. There were a lot of happy, excited and tired faces that came off the buses so I imagine there was some rest over the weekend. The trip was a great success and, as always, I am grateful to Mr. Odey and his team for their hard work preparing for and running the trip.

A reminder that our Parent Satisfaction Survey is now open. We really encourage parents to participate – it is a very useful tool that assists our continued development. It is also a good time to remind parents that myself and my colleagues are always available should you have any questions or feedback, contact details are on the website.

We have class parties on Friday for our Primary classes, details will have been sent to you in the Weekly Roundup. We have two eagerly awaiting Nativity Plays on Wednesday and Thursday – I look forward to seeing Early Years and Key Stage 1 parents at those. We have also decided that our Secondary students will have a festive ending to the term, with class parties taking place during period 5. The classes will decide on the exact format together with their form tutor.

Friday will also be an all-school non-uniform day and as part of our charity work we are asking for a $2 donation for the Peduli Anak Foundation and their work in Lombok.

We have a few families leaving at Christmas and we wish them all the best in their new adventures around the world, we also look forward to welcoming new families to the school in January. We also welcome the following teachers (welcome back for Mr. Fernandez).

  • Samantha Lindars will be joining the Year 2 team, taking over from Emma Noonan
  • Caroline Doyle will be covering Middle Leaders for their leadership time, taking over from Ashwathy Jayashankar
  • Christian Fernandez will be returning to the music team for 2 terms, taking over from Lu Yah Chu

I know you will join me in thanking Ms Noonan, Ms Jayashankar and Ms Chu for their hard work during their time at Dover Court. Ms Jayashakar and Ms Chu are staying in Singapore and will continue to work with us as supply teachers. Ms Noonan has been with Dover Court since 2016 and is moving back to New Zealand after a few years overseas. We wish her all the best on her return home,  I know she will be missed by her current and ex children and families.

I wish you all the best for the week ahead.

Mr. Christopher Short
Principal

News: Creative Writing Competition 2018/19

This week, Year 4 have been busy participating in the Global Campus Creative Writing competition 2018.

Classes in the year group have produced a unique form of writing called ‘Blackout Poetry’ and have achieved some impressive results.

To create a piece of Blackout Poetry, students were given an extract from one of this year’s ‘One World, One Book’ texts. They then had to identify individual words from the text to create new sentences and ideas, before blacking out the remaining words.

Judging this year’s creative writing is not going to be an easy task!
