Dear Parents and Carers,

I often tell people I meet at functions in Singapore that I have the best job in the world. It's not a comment I make lightly, but to spend your working day surrounded by passionate staff and energetic and enthusiastic children and young people is truly inspiring. Last week was United Nations World Children’s Day which we had to spread through the week to accommodate all the activities we wanted to fit in. I had five meetings with a variety of groups of students from the youngest to the oldest students we have. The ideas presented by the children were brilliant and the interest in helping develop the school further was very heartening to see. Our challenge now is to ensure that these groups see that we take their ideas forward at least in discussing them – there is only one idea that may not come to fruition – as much as I’d love to see a rollercoaster in school!

I was walking in front of two Year 1 boys last week and they were discussing Christmas. I was delighted to hear one boy say that he had already written to Santa but then to be advised by the second boy that he should also tell his parents what he wanted as well – sound advice!

5JP and 5DH ran the Upper Primary assembly last week on the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur. It was an excellent assembly with a highlight being King Minos appearing in toga and red baseball cap vowing to ‘Make Crete great again!’. Political satire at its finest and written by 10 year olds – for those worried about where the world is going at the moment, I’m confident the next generation will sort things out.

Last Friday's Secondary assembly on the topic Global Citizenship was extremely strong. Our IB students led us through their own experiences of Global Citizenship, with Grace in Year 12 very bravely having her hair shaved off, live on the stage during the assembly. She did this to raise money for the service work she will be doing whilst on the Nord Anglia expedition to Tanzania. She managed to raise over $700 during the assembly and we hope that this will increase even further. A box for donations has been placed in the school reception, should anyone wish to support her.

I was honoured to join students, staff and parents at the launch of the 2018 IN Art Exhibition at the Australian High Commission on Wednesday. We have 5 pieces of art on display and it was fantastic to see them in such a professional arena. The exhibition runs until mid January and I would recommend going along as the artwork is of an astoundingly high quality.

We were delighted to welcome Donna Costello from Juilliard to the school last week. She is our first dance specialist to visit the school to help Ms Dodson and the PE department as we develop dance across the school. She will be back in March and we will arrange activities for parent to allow you to see how this strand of the Juilliard programme will enhance our performing arts at the school.

Most of the Secondary school are on expedition this week across 4 countries. There is a great deal of research at the moment on the impact of outdoor education – a recent study by the University of Edinburgh is one example – and we know that our young people will return with great stories and experiences that will enrich their lives. We look forward to sharing their photos and stories on their return.

Finally, a reminder that our ECAs will finish on Friday 30th November.

Have a great week.

Principal

News: World Children’s Day 2018
Last week, students from Year 1 to Year 6 have been celebrating World Children’s Day by taking part in a range of Flipped Classroom events throughout the school.
As part of these sessions, the students became the teachers and taught a range of skills and activities to their peers.
Also, student groups such as the School Council and the House Captains met with Mr. Short and members of our Senior Leadership Team to share issues that were important to them.
Thank you to all of the staff and students for supporting and taking part in World Children’s Day this year!

UPDATE: ‘Photographers of the Year’ Competition
After receiving several hundred photo submissions from students around the world, special guest judge, Randy Plett, has shortlisted 60 photographs which will now go forward to the next round of judging.
We are extremely excited to announce that, among the shortlisted entries are Dover Court’s Ada and Kabir!
A panel of judges will now pick 11 photos to feature on this year’s ‘Photographers of the Year’ calendar. However the 12th photograph is a ‘Student Choice’ entry. This means Ada and Kabir need your help!
