Dear Parents and Carers,

The school was eerily quiet last week as most of the Secondary students were away on their annual residential trips. I saw the Gopeng group when they returned to school and there was a tangible buzz of energy from students and staff alike. The excitement as the students started to tell their parents about the amazing week they had was electric. I have feeling there was a lot of rest over the weekend from Secondary students and the staff! I am very grateful to the Progress Leaders who have worked tirelessly over the last few months to plan and then lead their trips – this is no easy undertaking. They are ably assisted by the teachers who accompanied each year group who work hard to make sure each trip is a challenging but memorable experience -  my thanks also go to the staff who gave up their week. We were also excited to welcome our World Scholars' Cup team back from Yale University last week. Thanh-Lan, Suhani and Amelia did really well in all parts of the competition and we are very proud of them.

Mr. Jones organised our first Coff-EE event on Friday. This was to allow Year 13 students to give a presentation on their 4,000 word extended essays as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The students are covering some extremely challenging topics including an analysis of Marcarthyism, who is the villain in ‘A brave new World’ and how Carol Ann Duffy tackles sexism in other works of literature. The was also an analysis (with scale model) of the physics involved in ancient weapons such as catapults. It was an enlightening event and I look froward to seeing this hard work translate into excellent IBDP scores next summer. If you are still unsure of the structure of the IB there is a parent workshop on Thursday at 08:45.

We had two parent workshops last week, the first on the IPC and then on Thursday we welcomed Bluephish to the school to give a talk to parents on how to manage their child’s access to the digital world. Their talk complemented the work we do in school with children and we plan to do further work with them to continue to develop our programme in this important area.

Year 5 leave tomorrow for their trip so I know there will be a lot of excited children waiting to get underway on Tuesday morning. After their adventure in Malaysia last year they go slightly further afield to build on their experiences. Our programme is planned so there is a gradual increase in challenge to ensure students are ready ultimately for the challenges of the Borneo jungle as they get into upper Secondary on the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Gold Award.

We have our last House Day of the term this week and we are very excited to welcome Zoe Griffiths, a Maths presenter to speak to our school community about the exciting world of maths.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the DCA Christmas fair on Saturday. I believe there is the opportunity to throw things at a picture of Ms Lebihan, Mr. Bull and myself on one stall and, possibly, the wet sponges stall for a period of time in the afternoon! We have integrated the event with our Christmas concert so there are many reasons to come along and support his wonderful event. There will be lots of gift ideas as well in the Cooper Hall.

We have now finalised the arrangements with the LTA for the traffic lights outside the school and these will be installed in Term 2. I am grateful to the parents who have helped bring the need for this to the attention of the relevant authorities.

Have a great week, a reminder that ECAs have stopped for term 1.

Principal
